Friday 19th May saw the annual North Lincolnshire Business Awards take place at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe, with Youth Engineering Scunthorpe (YES) taking home the North Lincolnshire Business Investment Award.
In order to be nominated for the award, companies had to demonstrate that they had made a financial investment to grow their business in the North Lincolnshire area, and applied a policy of employing local people, contractors and suppliers, while demonstrating positive sustainability and impact for the future.
This year’s nominees for the award were YES, GS Kelsey Construction, and Moulded Fibre Products Ltd.
Founded in 2014, the charity, Youth Engineering Project, opened its first manufacturing base, Youth Engineering Scunthorpe, with a very specific goal. This goal was to develop a long-term, sustainable approach to helping young people from the North Lincolnshire area gain the necessary skills and qualifications (including NVQs, functional skills training, forklift licenses, and HNCs) required to find long-term employment.
Since YES’ inception, 18 candidates have been placed in full-time employment with local businesses, such as S&E Engineering, PD Fabrication, and SJG Logistics. Commenting on the project, Tim Strawson, YES founder, said, “We want to provide an intervention strategy, and support local disadvantaged young people in making the difficult transition from unemployment, into full-time, sustainable positions.”
YES is now in its third year, and has proven the model can deliver. Ongoing profitability will be reinvested into the charity, and into another site in the North Lincolnshire area.
Upon winning the award, Managing Director, Lindsay Cates, remarked, “It is an honour to accept this award, and receive recognition for our work within the local community. I would also like to thank the dedication and hard work of the Youth Engineering team, without whom winning this award would not have been possible. I look forward to this accomplishment being advanced upon, and to the continued growth of YES. ”
Congratulations to all the NLBA winners and nominees.
