Sustainability is a big ticket item for many construction companies, builders and contractors. Read CEO Tom Cornell’s blog to find out what Bradbury Group is doing to combat the climate change challenge and the launch of an exciting UK first.

Time is running out for climate change

The need to achieve environmental sustainability, in particular addressing climate change, is arguably the most pressing challenge of our time.

Steel is a building block of the global economy, used by almost every industry and is the planet’s largest carbon-emitting manufacturing sector, responsible for 7% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions. This is because it relies on high-carbon coal in its production process. (source: World Economic Forum)

The concept of steel manufactured with reduced carbon dioxide emissions is of significant interest to many industries. Globally, steel producers are racing to be the first to net zero or carbon neutral goals, and the construction market is following suit. Tier 1 contractors quite rightly, are driving their contractors and others to go down the low carbon route. According to the Sustainable Futures UK Report 2024 (NBS) nine out of ten architects/specifiers worked on projects with sustainable outcome targets.

Making Britain a clean energy superpower

The Chancellor’s Autumn Budget demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing the UK’s clean energy sector and promoting climate technologies.

As part of the commitment to “securing the UK’s place as a global leader in clean energy, protecting consumers and driving economic growth” the budget aimed to prioritise infrastructure investment, green technologies and various sustainability initiatives.

There were measures to support clean energy and net-zero including funding for investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS), nuclear and “green hydrogen” made with renewable electricity.

A launch like no other

Never one to shy away from a challenge, the Bradbury team partnered with Germany’s largest flat steel producer who are resolutely pursuing a goal of producing steel using a completely carbon-neutral pathway by 2045.

This is a key step in supporting our customers reach their low carbon goals and generate competitive edge. We will be launching the UK’s first low carbon security-rated doors with a 58% lower carbon footprint, compared to traditional steel doors on the market.

This groundbreaking launch signifies a major advancement in sustainable solutions for construction projects, offering architects, specifiers and contractors a lower carbon alternative for their security and fire door needs, without compromising on quality, durability, or design.

Independently verified, this is a significant carbon saving per door, and even more so where multiple doors are required on a project.

This launch will be followed by an exciting programme of new innovations in 2025 where we are committed to a significant investment in innovation over the next 12 months

We’ll be able to tell you all about it at London Build, but if you can’t wait, please get in touch.

I’d also recommend you come along to see us on stand N40 in the National Hall where you will learn more about our sustainability journey.

You will also get a chance to use our unique carbon calculator. Designed to provide customers with a snapshot of carbon savings from switching to our low-carbon doors, it gives calculations in tangible savings, such as miles driven, seedlings grown, waste recycled and smartphones charged.

The Bradbury sustainability journey

Companies measure their greenhouse gas emissions via three scopes. We have many projects in the pipeline, influencing each of the scopes including waste reduction, paperless & recycling practices, renewable energy sources, sustainable materials, operational waste and business travel.

In 2023, we achieved ISO 14001, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems which is setting a foundation for our environmental strategy. Our journey also includes introducing enhanced operational excellence practices and achieving independent certification to help us on our way.
